This one-day practical drawing workshop with artist Robin-Lee Hall builds on the theme of the exhibition Neighbours in Space and Time: Grafton Architects at the Soane Museum and guides participants in exploring parallels between the recently completed Marshall Building at the London School of Economics and the architecture of Sir John Soane’s Museum.

Participants will start at the museum with a view of the exhibition, covering the relationship between the two buildings, as well as a short tour of the museum, pointing out some of the spatial, compositional and material design approaches which have been continued in the design of the new building. Robin will then give a few hints and tips about how to tackle perspective and abstraction and how to develop a sense of depth in your drawings. We will then move on to the Marshall Building and start to draw. At the end of the day we will return to the museum to have a friendly critique of the day’s work.

Who is the course for?

The course is suitable for adults aged 18+ and spaces are limited to 15 participants. It is useful for participants to have drawn before, but drawings don’t necessarily have to be architecturally accurate. The workshop is about being inspired by the space and responding in ways unique to the individual. Abstract, as well as figurative work is perfectly acceptable.

Information about materials

As part of the ticket price, participants will receive an A5 John Soane’s Museum sketchbook, as well as use of drawing materials. If you would like to bring your own drawing equipment, such as a larger sketchbook, you are fine to do so.
