Finance Director TOP


We are a national museum under the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, we are seeking a Finance Director as a key member of our Senior Management Team (SMT). This role is central to the Museum’s financial affairs, as well as those of its trading subsidiary Soane Museum Enterprises and an independent charity Sir John Soane’s Museum Trust.  The Finance Director is responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the Museum ensuring that it fulfils its charitable objectives and corporate governance requirements.

As a qualified accountant you will find this  is a challenging post requiring attention to detail, the ability to take an overview and to make progress with several tasks in parallel while working under pressure. It is also an exceptional opportunity to work in a small and friendly environment at a busy and exciting time.

Volunteer Vacancies TOP

We have lots of opportunities to Volunteer at the Soane for anyone aged 18 and over. If you’re looking to gain experience for your CV, develop new skills or get involved with a world class museum, we may have an opportunity for you.

Volunteers at the Soane are engaged in assisting with our visitor experience, playing an important role in the daily running of the Museum. We also have volunteers assisting behind the scenes, in roles such as Conservation and our Picture Library. We will advertise any behind the scenes roles when they are available, but please get in touch if you’d like to find out more.

As a volunteer you will receive access to free training and out of pocket travel expenses.

Volunteer Visitor Assistant

Volunteering alongside experienced members of staff, and playing an integral role in the daily running of the Museum, Volunteer Visitor Assistants help to provide our visitors with a world-class visitor experience. The role includes welcoming visitors to the Museum, interpreting the different and unique spaces for visitors, and safeguarding the collections to ensure they remain as they were left in 1837 for future generations of visitors.​

Conservation Volunteer TOP

The house-museum of the celebrated Regency architect, Sir John Soane, displays his varied and idiosyncratic collections just as he left them on his death in 1837. Our small conservation team, consisting of one full-time head of conservation and two part-time assistant conservators, are responsible for the care of not only over three-thousand museum objects and framed works, but also the precious historic interiors in which they are housed.

The conservation department is looking for one voluntary assistant who could help with the routine care of the collections one day a week. This would be an opportunity to learn the skills and principles of collection care in a historic house, and to have a role in helping to preserve this amazing survival from the Regency period.

Building Explorers Volunteer TOP

Building Explorers is an after-school architecture club for 8-10 year olds. It runs from 4 – 5.30pm on most Tuesday afternoons in term time. The club aims to engage children in learning about the built environment and exploring their own creativity through a range of activities and occasional trips. The club is provided free of charge to children in Years 4 & 5 from our closest local primary schools.

Volunteering with Building Explorers will give the post holder an insight into how informal learning activities for children are run in a small but busy national museum. This experience will provide an excellent opportunity for those wanting to learn more about museum education to gain valuable skills and experience in helping to deliver sessions for this key audience group.
