Discover how you can support our work and explore opportunities for Volunteering at Sir John Soane’s Museum.
We aim to widen access, increase depth of participation, and promote diversity, equality and social outcomes through our volunteering opportunities. It's about working in a mutually beneficial way to make the most of volunteers' talents, experience and interests, and recognising the positive contributions they make to visitors and the collections.
We are extremely grateful to all our volunteers. We hope they enjoy sharing their enthusiasm and developing their skills in an inspiring, supportive environment.
We welcome applicants from all sections of the community. As an organisation, we want to offer opportunities especially to those from our local community and to people new to museums and heritage.
You don't need to have volunteered before; we will provide all relevant training and make sure you have relevant supervision and support.
Above all, we are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic about the Museum and able to join our close-knit team of staff and volunteers.
We have lots of opportunities to Volunteer at the Soane. If you’re looking to gain experience for your CV, develop new skills or meet new people we may have an opportunity for you.
Volunteers at the Soane help us in visitor engagement roles, assisting the museum by interpreting our unique and inspiring spaces to visitors. We also have volunteers helping in different ways, such as supporting our research library or conservation team.

If you spot a role below that interests you then please complete our registration form and return to us as an email attachment. If you wish to hand-write your application then please download and print the registration form. You can either post this to the Museum or hand it in at our front desk.

Unfortunately Sir John Soane’s Museum isn’t able to offer any Placements or Internships at this time.
Sir John Soane’s Museum hosts two work experience placements a year in the summer and we are presently partnered with local state schools in Camden and are working with charities which help us reach different audiences. As a result we’re not able to accept other work experience requests currently. We do offer other ways for young people to get involved with the work at Sir John Soane’s Museum, including our Youth Panel.
Volunteering alongside experienced members of staff, and playing an integral role in the daily running of the Museum, Volunteer Visitor Assistants help to provide our visitors with a world-class visitor experience. The role includes welcoming visitors to the Museum, interpreting the different and unique spaces for visitors, and safeguarding the collections to ensure they remain as they were left in 1837 for future generations of visitors.
