Mark Smout and Laura Allen, of Smout Allen practice, deliver the third talk in this series exploring the continuing power and relevance of avant-garde projects in the 1960s and 1970s for contemporary architectural practice.

The avant-garde of the 60s and 70s has been likened to an ‘architectural Big Bang’, such was the intensity of energy and ambition with which it exploded into the post-war world. It produced architectural projects that redefined the discipline and remain highly influential today.

This moment provides the subject for Re-Imagining the Avant-Garde – a special issue of Architectural Design edited by Matthew Butcher and Luke C. Pearson – which explores why this historical period continues to retain an undeniable grip on new generations of architectural designers and theorists and how they are reinventing these approaches in a contemporary context.

About the speakers

Mark Smout is a Professor of Architecture and Landscape Futures and Laura Allen is a Professor of Architecture and Augmented Landscapes, both based at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL and Directors of the MA/MLA. Their practice (Smout Allen), focuses on the dynamic relationship between the natural and the man made and how this can be revealed to enhance the experience of the architectural landscape. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as the Venice Biennale, Chicago Biennale, the V&A and the Royal Academy.

About the series

The series has been created in partnership with Matthew Butcher and Luke C. Pearson to mark the publication of Re-imagining the Avant-Garde: Revisiting the Architecture of the 1960s and 1970s – a special issue of Architectural Design (AD). Also coinciding with the launch is an exhibition at Betts Project featuring work by some of the contributors to the journal.
