As part of the programme of events complementing Space Popular: The Portal Galleries, join acclaimed photographer Grant Smith for a one day introductory workshop on architectural photography, exploring the varied architecture near Lincoln’s Inn Fields, including exclusive access to the Freemasons Hall.
The course will give you an understanding of framing and composition and how to use these tools to enhance your photographs. We will look at how to identify the optimum time for photographing a building and how the sun’s position is vital to achieving a good photograph.
Taking its cue from the concept of the portal providing entrance into another environment, the workshop will examine real portals, using them to frame views and enhance your images, leading the viewer into the subject.
The session will start with a tour of Space Popular: The Portal Galleries. We will then walk to the nearby Freemasons’ Hall for your first assignment: photographing the interior using doorways and portals to frame your images and experimenting with different focal length lenses.
A second assignment after lunch will involve photographing around Lincoln’s Inn Fields. We will then return to the Museum for a review of the images and a discussion about the challenges faced.
This workshop is suitable for all abilities ages 18+. You will need to bring your own camera or camera phone. Please note that flash photography is not permitted inside the Museum.
