As part of the programme of events responding to our current exhibition, Hidden Masterpieces, join bookbinder Helen Perry for a day-long session in which you will learn how to prepare and make your own Coptic sewn book, a historic binding, using decorative papers and exposed sewing at the spine.
The session begins with an exclusive visit to the Museum’s Reference Library and Archive where Dr Frances Sands, Curator of Drawings and Books, will show you some different examples of bindings from Sir John Soane’s collection. Returning to Art Room, you will examine and choose appropriate covering materials, plan and punch paper, spine and covers in preparation for sewing. Over the day, you will complete and stitch a multi-sectioned, adhesive-free book under Helen’s expert tuition. Your completed book lies flat when open and is popular amongst other things as a journal, travel book or artist sketchbook.
This session is suitable for all levels of experience, and particularly students new to bookbinding. 18+ years. All materials are supplied.
