We are only permitted to have a set number of people in the Museum at a time, and so to avoid long queues, any group of six people or more people need to book with us. Unbooked groups are turned away. Our maximum group size is 20 including tutors - larger groups will be split over two or more timeslots:
6 - 20 people = 1 timeslot
21 - 40 people = 2 timeslots
41 - 60 people = 3 timeslots
We are very busy, and recommend you book at least 3 months in advance.
We book groups in for a one hour visit on the following days:
Tuesday 10am, 2pm or 3.30pm
Friday 10am, 2pm or 3.30pm
We can accommodate three groups per day, provided that each group leaves before the next group arrive. Wednesdays and Thursdays are reserved for primary schools during term time. To make a school booking please click here. Groups cannot book for Saturday visits or for evening openings.
All group visits are self-directed. Your own guide or lecturer may address the group on arrival in the Library-Dining Room, but we ask you to then disperse rather than gather in large groups elsewhere in the Museum. This helps to improve access for other visitors.
We offer free audio tours to download before visiting. Audio tours are not available in the Museum. Our 'A Short Guide' publication follows the route recommended by Soane and may be purchased for £8 online (plus postage) or from our reception. Our Warders are very knowledgeable and are happy to answer any questions you may have during your visit.
Subject to availability, a short introductory talk (English only) can be arranged. This must be clearly requested when the booking is made. Alternatively, perhaps you might wish to listen to Stephen Fry's intro talk before you arrive.
Donations help us to preserve this wonderful building and the collections. Any donation you can make will be very much appreciated. We hope to raise around £50 from each group timeslot. We accept cash, cheque, or bank transfers. We cannot invoice groups for donations, but we can issue a receipt if requested. Donations are non-refundable.
To book a guided tour please click here. Guided tours are for the general public and limited to 22 people, and so we ask that no group larger than 15 buy tickets for a guided tour.

Important Information - please read
On arrival, you will be asked by our Warder to turn off mobile phones, tablets and cameras. This is to protect the special atmosphere in the house from the glow of screens and to ensure our visitors watch where they are walking to reduce the risk of damage or injury. You must request permission when you book if you wish to photograph or sketch so we can discuss your requirements and our guidelines.
We regret that large bags and suitcases cannot be accommodated in the Museum or in our small cloakroom area. To prevent damage to the building and collection, you will be asked to place any bags that you wish to carry around with you into a clear plastic carrier bag. The Museum's delicate historic interiors are narrow and we cannot easily protect works of art; meaning there is a risk of damage from the straps and buckles. Using our plastic bags helps to reduce the risk as much as possible. The Museum reserves the right to search bags as a condition of entry.
