Thursday 21 September will mark the anniversary of John Soane’s knighthood in 1831. To celebrate this date Sir John Soane’s Museum will be hosting a library open day. Only occasionally open to the public, our handsome research library is found on the first floor of number 14 Lincoln’s Inn Fields and includes an exquisite starfish ceiling which is very characteristic of Soane’s interior decorative work. From among Soane’s 30,000-strong architectural drawings collection there will be a display of seventeenth-, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century drawings for and by other notable Knights. These will include drawings by Sir James Thornhill and Sir William Chambers as well as designs which were made for the artist Sir Peter Francis Bourgeois RA, the infamous merchant Sir Lawrence Dundas and of course Sir John Soane himself. If you would like to visit the library on our open day please come to the front door of number 14 – to the right-hand side of the Museum itself – between 10am and 4.30pm. We look forward to welcoming you.
