Sir John Soane's Museum is pleased to announce another special screening of Sir John Betjeman's highly-acclaimed BBC film A Passion for Churches, introduced by the Director, Eddie Mirzoeff.

It was in Norfolk, rowing with his father on the River Bure, that the eight-year-old John Betjeman first noticed a church tower outlined against the sky. In 1974 Sir John returned to the Diocese of Norwich (which includes most of Norfolk and a little of Suffolk). This remarkable film follows Sir John as he delights in the art and architecture of its spectacular churches, and looks with humour and affection at the daily life of the Anglican Church in town and country. He visits mediaeval churches, rich in painted glass and carving, and the Queen's parish church at Sandringham - 'at first glance it rather reminds me of the Wee Kirk o' the Heather in Hollywood'. Other highlights include the Mothers' Union picnicking in the Cathedral cloister and the Chaplain of the Broads rounding up his floating congregation for Easter service. The film is a moving homage to 'the dear old C of E' - to Sir John the essence of Englishness.

The film runs for 50 minutes
