The first ever book about Sir John Soane's greatest treasure - one of the most important Egyptian antiquities anywhere in the world - the unique sarcophagus of the Pharaoh Seti I. The sarcophagus of Pharaoh Seti I is regarded by many as the single greatest Egyptian item outside Egypt. Discovered in 1817 in the Seti tomb in the Valley of Kings, by maverick archaeologist Giovanni Belzoni, the sarcophagus now resides in Sir John Soane's Museum in London's Lincoln's Inn Fields.
One of the world's leading Egyptologists, John Taylor, outlines the life of Seti I, the background to the creation of the sarcophagus, the excitement surrounding its discovery and the fascinating story of its journey to London and Sir John Soane's Museum. At the heart of the book is the first complete modern published translation of the entire text of the
hieroglyphs on the coffin, which will be fully illustrated. Also includes an essay by Helen Dorey on the celebrations held at the Museum to welcome the arrival of Seti I in 1825.
By John H Taylor, with an appendix by Helen Dorey
