Friendship/Christmas Decorative Bauble 2012

The Soane Museum's Christmas decoration for 2012 is a detail from a ceiling design by Robert Adam for the Honorable Horace Walpole Esq. for the Round Drawing Room at Strawberry Hill. This drawing is just one of the 9,000 drawings from the Adam office acquired by Soane in the early 1830's.

These baubles are made in the northeast of China; each design is skillfully hand-painted onto the inside of a clear glass ball - a highly specialised skill originally developed to decorate the insides of imperial snuff bottles. The resultant super-smooth glossy exterior adds to the magical appeal of these desirable decorations.
