Shakespeare's Flowers Lavender Soap Bar

WAS £8 NOW £4. These Lavender Soap Bar are hand made locally using natural ingredients and were inspired by Sir John Soane's Painting of The Bust of Shakespeare, encircled by all the Flowers mentioned in his Works by Clara Maria Pope, 1835.  

“I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows, Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine, With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine” :   A Midsummer Night's Dream (2.1.255-60) 

 

The Bust of Shakespeare, encircled by all the Flowers mentioned in his Works, 1835, Clara Maria Pope.

 

Clara Maria Pope was an artist who turned to painting flowers later in her career; Soane purchased the painting shown here for the sum of £35 in 1835 after it was exhibited at the Royal Academy.  

 

Soane venerated Shakespeare and paid homage to him, by constructing a ‘Shakespeare Recess’ in his house in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. he also commissioned and purchased many paintings of Shakespearian scenes for display. 

 

There are many editions of Shakespeare in Soane’s Library; these include Kemble’s copy of the iconic First Folio dating from 1623
