These folding maps are laid on to high-quality cloth and beautifully presented in antique marbled slip cases; they are individually hand made in Buckinghamshire in the family run workshop of craftsman Phillip Burrough. They are made using pigment ink and archival paper and hand-laid onto cloth. Even the glue used is made from an old recipe.
The London Directory shows London in 1792, the year Sir John Soane started to build No. 12 Lincoln’s Inn Field; it was created by Robert Sayer who traded as a print seller and map publisher between the years 1751 – 1794.
Folding maps came into being in the mid-18th century when turnpike roads became extensive and good enough to make long-distance travel easier.
