About this website

There’s a sort of secret community of people who have visited Sir John Soane’s Museum and fallen for it: for its light, its exemplary architecture, the disorderly order and serious jokiness of Soane’s arrangements, or perhaps for it as museum, a place of musing, or for the concept of London’s largest time capsule.

A professor in Nottingham initiated me into Sir John Soane’s Museum.

“It’s the best place in London,” he said. “It’s wonderful.” When I mention the Museum, some people’s faces open up with comradeship: now we have something to talk about!

You are invited to write brief pieces about your favourite objects, discoveries, intuitions and perceptions to include on this website.

Contributions can be any kind of writing (fiction or otherwise; narrative or otherwise).

This site comprises both public contributions and my own work undertaken during the course of a writer’s residency in the Museum. All material on this site is copyright © Bernard Cohen and iondividual contributors. Please do not use any written or design element without express permission.

Please note
Sir John Soane’s Museum is not responsible for any material on this site, including my fictional guidenotes or page designs. Please send correspondence about the site (suggestions or problems) by clicking here.

This website uses decorative elements and approximated colours from within the Museum. Several of the elements have been digitally processed for well-intentioned design reasons, but with the result that they no longer accurately portray Soane’s originals.
