YOUNG ARCHITECTS' CLUB
Sir John Soane intended his Museum as a place where architects could
visit to learn and be inspired about architecture. The Soane is proud
to offer a new Young Architects' Club for children aged 7 - 13. The
club will meet on the 1st Saturday of every month, 10.00am to 1.00pm.
Children will work with museum staff and architects to learn more about
a profession that combines science, art and design. Activities will
include experiments and practical artistic sessions. Members will also
receive a membership pack.
The timetable is as follows:
Week 1 (November 3 2007):
Primitive Huts
The club will look at the most basic structures and the Young Architects
(YAs) will create their own primitive huts out of a mixture of twigs,
straw, clay and twine.
Week 2 (December 1 2007):
Classical Structures
This week the YAs will look at Greek structures around the Museum, including
the wonderful architectural models not on display to the public, and
build their own structure inspired by the Greeks using glue guns and
rolled-up paper.
Week 3 (January 5 2008):
'Archy'tecture
Arches and domes are the focus of this week. YAs will study domes and
arches around the Museum and then will work in groups to build domes.
Week 4 (February 2 2008):
Inspired by Nature
Before the YAs can complete their designs, they will need to consider
decoration. This week the YAs will examine the wide variety of animals
and plants used in architectural decoration in the Museum's collection.
They will draw in the Museum and mould some decorations using plasticine.
Week 5 (March 1 2008):
Out and About
Tour around the local area to discover, draw and photograph the different
types of simple structures used today and examine the decoration used
on buildings. Parents will be contacted for permission and a risk assessment
of the intended route will be produced. YAs may need to wrap up warm!
After the tour, YAs will start thinking about and planning the shelter
they will be creating.
No session in April
Week 6 (May 3 2008):
Plots and Plans
This week will focus on drawing designs. YAs will look at some of the
architectural plans in the collection, before plotting out their own
design and creating a plan using technical drawing techniques. YAs will
also consider which materials they will use for the model of their design.
Week 7 (June 7 2008):
Model Making
YAs will make a scale model of their shelter using a range of materials
and the techniques learnt earlier in the year.
Week 8 (July 5 2008):
Shelter Show
The final week will be an opportunity to put the finishing touches on
the models and exhibit them for others to see (including parents). To
finish off the year for the YAs, refreshments will be provided and there
will be architecture-related games and activities.
A small annual membership fee of £5 applies
Membership is on an annual basis (September-July)
