'Hogarth Meets Manga' Summer School

In July 2009, pupils from three schools in Waltham Forest took part in a week-long summer school. Pupils visited Sir John Soane's Museum to see the famous 'A Rake's Progress' by William Hogarth.

This series of eight paintings was created in 1733 as a humorous warning to people about how not to live their lives. Pupils were challenged to update the story from the paintings and to re-create it in a Manga style. Using the paintings as inspiration, the pupils worked together to establish their modernised version. They then worked with Ilya, a Manga Artist based in London, to learn more about Manga and to develop their designs.
