Sir Nathaniel Dance (1735-1811)
Part of a letter from Nathaniel Dance to George
Dance the Elder from Rome. It bears a note that it
had been dated 28 July 1759, and the text is written
round a small sketch of a painting on which he was
then at work. This he refers to as `Virginia’, the full
title being `The death of Virginia by the hand of her
father, to prevent her falling a prey to the lust of
Appius’, exhibited at the Society of Artists, May
1761
